Here is a quick description of the differences between training, consultancy and coaching:
In training or teaching
The aim is that people learn how to do something.
The teacher or trainer is the locus of
expertise and can choose a number of ways to teach or train - ranging
from instruction, and demonstration to facilitation. This can be
delived to individuals or to groups.
In consultancy
The aim is to get advice on how to organise or do things differently
The consultant is the locus of expertise
and can choose a number of ways to research and share this information -
ranging from reports, presentations, feedback. This analysis,
reporting and feedback can be to individuals or to groups. The
consultant can advise one person on better ways to do things or can
advise at a much more strategic level - focusing on systems, processes
and organising things across or beyond the insitution.
In coaching
The aim is to facilitate people to make changes
The locus of expertise is in the client
and the coach brings coaching skills and can also bring experience of
working on similar issues. The coach can choose a number of ways to
work, including with groups or one-to-one, but the focus is on
ensuring client awareness, clarity, defining, recognising and evaluating
the client's progress, and strategies for making and managing change.
These changes can focus on taking action but can also be changes in
awareness, communication or ways of working or relating to others.
